[VAIO_PC] During Use My Device Gets Hot

  • VAIO gets hot, and the fan got louder.
    • The bottom surface of the PC is hot.
    • The PC is hot around the exhaust port.
    • One of the 4 sides of the LCD cover is hot.
    • The AC adapter is hot.
    • The palm rest is hot.

The PC has parts that generate heat depending on usage of the machine and environmental factors.

Applicable Products
All VAIO PCs

Explanation
The computer has parts inside of it that generate heat, such as AC adapter, the battery, the CPU, the hard drive, etc, depending on the usage environment. Therefore, the main body and AC adapter will get hot after it has been used for several hours.

  • Precautions

If you feel that the PC or AC adapter is abnormally warm – hotter than usual – and if it does not cool down even after checking the usage environment and maintenance, please turn off the computer’s power and stop using it.  Once it cools down, unplug the AC adapter’s power cable, take off the battery, and contact the VAIO support center for a repair consultation.

In your instruction manual/e-manual, there are precautions on how to use the computer safely, including important rules like not covering up the exhaust ports/inlets or not using the computer on your lap for several hours.  Please refer to them as well.

  • Coping methods

Please check the environment that the product is being used in / how the product is being used.

  • When the main body of the machine  is hot

Your computer is loaded with a cooling fan, which cools down the computer by pulling air into the body and using it to dissipate the internal heat.  If the air does not flow well through the exhaust port and inlet, this will affect the heat dissipation and will cause the PC temperature to rise abnormally. Check to see if anything is interfering with the computer’s ventilation.

  • Are you covering up the exhaust port/inlet?  If exhaust port/inlet is too near to the wall or if it is covered with something, the internal heat cannot be discharged efficiently.
  • Is there dust stuck in the exhaust port/inlet?  Dust can interfere with heat dissipation and cooling effects, which can increase the PC’s internal temperature.  Please remove all dust from the inlets.
  • Are you placing the PC on something soft, such as carpet?  If you place the PC on something soft like carpet, you may be blocking exhaust port/inlet or the heat of the bottom surface may not be released enough.

Outside temperatures can also increase the computer’s internal temperature. Avoid placing the computer in a place that receives direct sunlight or next to devices that generate heat.

  • When the AC adapter is hot

When the AC adapter is wrapped in cloth or receives direct sunlight, it tends to trap the heat inside. Avoid using it at a place where heat gets trapped in the AC adapter.

Reference

AC adapter

  • A general household power supply (100 volts) is AC, but PC power and batteries are run by DC.  In order to supply power from household power supply to the PC, the internal circuit of  theAC adapter changes AC 100 volts to DC 19.5 volts or DC 16 volts.
  • The reason why AC adapter generates heat is because as it is converting the voltage from AC to DC the energy.  To avoid trapping this heat inside the PC, the AC adapter is plugged in outside of the PC, and this avoids unnecessary heat inside the AC adapter as well.
